This vintage Balinese Barong mask is a hand-carved and hand-painted wooden wall sculpture from Indonesia. The Barong is a revered protective figure in Balinese Hindu tradition, symbolizing benevolent forces and spiritual balance. While ceremonial Barong masks are used in ritual dance performances, this example was created as decorative wall art inspired by that tradition.
Expertly carved from wood and richly painted, the mask features the expressive bulging eyes, fanged mouth, and ornate crown elements characteristic of Barong iconography. The vibrant red, gold, and dark-toned detailing enhances its dramatic presence and dimensional depth.
This piece was produced for the decorative and tourist art market and was not intended for use as a wearable ceremonial mask. It functions as a striking wall display with strong cultural character.
Estimated to date from the late 20th century (circa 1980s).
